  MAHATMA GANDHI Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi also known as Gandhi, was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist and political ethicist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British rule, and to later inspire movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Born and raised in a Hindu family in coastal Gujaraton 2 October 1869, Gandhi trained in the law at the Inner Temple and London. After two uncertain years in India, where he was unable to start a successful law practice, he moved to South Africa in 1893 to represent an Indian merchant in a lawsuit. He went on to live in South Africa for 21 years. It was here Gandhi first employed nonviolent resistance in a campaign for civil rights.   AMBULUWAWA TOWER   The Ambuluwawa Trigonometrical Station, in Gampola(Srilanka), consists of large winding tower resembling a stylized Buddhist stupa, a Hindu Kovil, a Muslim Mosque and a Christian Church. Ambuluwawa is a biodiversity complex and Sri Lanka’s first multi-religious sanctuary situated in the central highlands of the country. It is situated about 5 km from Gampola’s town center. The tower stands at a height of approximately 48 meters. The Ambuluwawa Mountain stands approximately 3560 meters above sea level.   It is an area richly diverse, with evergreen forests, blossomed flower plants as well creepers and about 200 different kinds of plants from 80 plant families including a variety of medicinal plants.   THE PALMYRAH TREE The Palmyrah is a treasure to Sri Lankans, and the rich cultivation spans Sri Lanka’s north and north-eastern and southern landscapes.   Palmyrah grows in arid soil and dry climates, and they a lifespan of around 120 years.   The trees bear fruits between February and May, and they appear purple-black in color with a shade of dark yellow and are round and coconut-shaped. The female Palmyrah plant produces about 6 to 12 bunches of fruits annually.  PALMYRAH TREE FOODS    Even today, the art of penning in palm-leaf manuscript continues. Even the fibrous part of the fruit can be eaten when ripe, raw, boiled, or roasted. The pulp is exported to several countries. The ripened fruit is used to make sweets that are known as delicacies of Jaffna. The fruit pulp is extracted and used to prepare kavum, a type of fried cake, and thal pinatu, a candy made of sheets of dry pulp sweetened with treacle. This sweetener can be enjoyed with a variety of food combinations.
